TRI ELECTRONICS G-24 GOLD TESTER MANUAL
Introduction:
G-24 is a unique high tech professional digital gold tester, developed by TRI Electronics, Inc. for efficient non-destructive determination of yellow and white gold only values from 6 to 24 karats. The principle of the G-24 Gold Tester is based on an electro chemical process, which measures the decay of electrical energy between the sample under test and the cathode in the sensor. The result is processed only in Karat and European Standard unit value. The G-24 determines yellow and white gold only, karatage from not gold to 24-karat range in alloys commonly in yellow gold used in the jewelry industry. The base metals are found in this alloys copper, silver, zinc and nickel. The most common gold used in the market is yellow, which utilizes and as base metals, silver and copper in a silver to copper ratio of 2:1 up to 1:2. The gold tester will only give accurate results in commonly alloyed compositions. White gold based metal consists of a small amount of copper, over 18% of nickel, less, then 5% of silver, and the rest is made up of zinc.
Operating Procedures:The G-24 test set consists of a unit (the unit has a built in sensor to test), which operates on three 1.5V alkaline batteries, a test plate, a small bottle with dropper to hold the testing liquid, and a cable for connecting the test plate and the unit. The following step-by-step procedure must be followed to properly perform gold tests:
- Turn on the unit by using the On/Off located at the bottom of the unit and wait for LCD to read "rdy" (indicating ready)
- Determine the type of the gold:
- For white gold test, press the "TEST" button located on top of the unit until a red light turns on right next to the display indicating that the unit is in "White Gold Testing Mode"
- The unit is in "Yellow Gold Testing Mode" when there is no red light next to the display (default testing mode)
Connect the unit with the testing plate by using the cable provided. Connect the black end of the cable to the unit. Insert the red end of the cable to the alligator clip, which is connected to the plate.
- Secure the testing object on the testing plate by pushing the alligator clip and inserting the object between the alligator clip and the plate.
- Clean the tip of the testing unit with a cotton swab to remove any dust particles or dirt.
- Select and clean thoroughly with the red eraser a testing point on the object; obtain one drop of liquid using the dropper provided with the testing kit and place it on the cleaned testing point. Apply the unit's nozzle to the pre-selected cleaned testing point and press the "TEST" button.
- Maintain unit in the same vertical position for approximately 4-5 second while the instrument indicates the result on the LCD.
- If the unit's LCD reads "FAIL", reset the unit by turning the unit Off and then On. Do not test at the same spot where the failure occurred without cleaning it thoroughly.
- In order to test filigree jewelry apply the nozzle to the testing object and avoid touching the inside metal contact with the jewelry.
- In order to make this unit ultra portable please refer to the instructions on how to make the gold tester ultra portable
Instructions on how to make the Gold Tester ultra portable:
G-24 was designed to be a portable gold tester. The testing plate is included for the convenience to secure the gold while testing but does not have any effect on the actual testing results. One can remove the alligator clip from the testing plate by removing the screw from the bottom of the plate. Before beginning the gold test connects the alligator clip with the unit by the cable provided and securely attach the gold piece on to the alligator clip for accurate results. Place a small drop of testing liquid directly in to the nozzle of the unit and apply the nozzle to the object. A convenient way to test gold is to put a small amount of liquid on the testing plate. Touch the nozzle of the tester to the liquid carefully avoiding making a direct contact with the testing plate. Apply the nozzle of the tester to the cleaned testing object.
Special Instructions:1. Clean the nozzle of the unit every 4-5 days with the clear cleaning liquid. Use a cotton swab to dry excessive cleaning liquid.
